We first started working with ecommerce store owners in 2009. Ecommerce was very new at the time and SAAS (software-as-a-service) systems like Shopify and BigCommerce were just coming into existence. Nobody was sure what SAAS would mean to the ecommerce world. Today, it’s clear that SAAS is a smarter way.
When we got started we were helping store owners get better conversion rates by improving their branding through custom design. Outstanding design positioned you as a leader back then. Now it’s table stakes.
More Than Design
Today there are so many options to get a great looking store built, that it becomes tempting to skip design. Good looking templates are so common and affordable that store owners have forgotten what design was about in the first place. It’s not about looking shiny or dazzling with fanciness. It’s about connecting with your audience. A one-size-fits-all template can get you by for a while, but it doesn’t do anything to connect with your audience… and missing connections means missing sales.
This doesn’t mean that you need to spend loads of cash on design, or even have a custom design. It does mean that the best results come from molding your site into a communication device that speaks in the language of your customer. Premade or bespoke, design is still needed to resonate with your client.
Success in Thirds
As much as we love design and could go on and on, design isn’t everything in ecommerce. It’s only one third of the equation.
In order for your store to succeed, you need three things:
- A product or service people want
- Branding and Design – You need a user experience that makes them take action
- Marketing – Get those eyeballs to your products
If you have an amazing product that people want, and an unbelievably designed website, you still need to market it or you’ll be celebrating alone. We can help there too.
Get in contact and tell us about your brand and needs. We’d love to discuss options and see if we’re the right partner for you.
