Facebook Marketing Requires Putting on a Show

Facebook is the digital boardwalk of the 21st century. For a business to get any of the traffic constantly walking by it, they have to use some of the tricks that old time barkers adopted. Namely, if a business on Facebook wants to get noticed, it needs to have a loud and strong message. It should be something that intrigues people, and if possible, have a really big crowd already gathered in front of it.

So what does that mean? Well, it means that if you’re going to use Facebook as a marketing platform, then you need to attract and keep an audience. That means you need to make posts that are interesting and will get people to like and share what you’re saying (since attention in the form of likes, shares, and comments is what drives Facebook’s algorithms). While it’s difficult to gauge what will and won’t attract the interest of Facebook users, generally speaking a business which posts pictures and videos designed to provoke a reaction will get noticed. Additionally, posts which offer users something (such as a discounted price for everyone who follows a business’s Facebook page during a given sale) will get people to sit up and pay attention.

Gathering an audience on Facebook is a long-term investment. Maybe you got some followers by offering coupons, and others because you have videos of your store cat who meows to greet people who walk in. The point is that it takes a lot of effort to gather a Facebook following, and you won’t realize the benefits of that bigger audience all at once. However, as you cultivate that crowd, you’ll see that your posts begin to get more attention. A loyal audience acts like a megaphone, amplifying your message and helping you reach more people than you ever could on your own.

In short, your virtual fan base is just like a loyal customer base. They will tell all of their friends about you, and help you get more business.

Paying For Facebook Ads

Facebook has changed their algorithms over the years in order to make it more difficult to reach a large number of people without help. That means a business needs to have a significantly larger audience today than it would have needed a few years ago (fortunately, there are a great deal more Facebook users now than there were then). For businesses who want to get a quick boost in visibility, you can pay Facebook to boost your ad.

Boosting your ad means that Facebook will feature your post, or your business’s profile page, in more people’s news feeds. This way, more people see you and you have a chance to reach more people than you otherwise would have. However, while a quick injection of publicity is a good way to get popular posts seen by more people, it doesn’t mean that a company can skip over the hard parts. Other critical ways of building an audience includes crafting good posts, and engaging with followers. Social media is about building relationships, and there’s no way to fast-forward to loyalty.
