How to Create an API Key on BigCommerce for Theme Development

In this video, we’ll show you how to generate an API key for use by you or your BigCommerce developer for ‘local development.’

Local development, also referred to non-stop by the BigCommerce community as ‘Stencil CLI’ is a way for developers to edit your BigCommerce store’s theme files and see the changes on their home or office computer (referred to as the local computer), but while connected to the live data from your store. This means we’re not working on a true copy of your store, but rather we’re using live data + a work-in-progress theme.

I know, it’s probably confusing.

Here’s what it boils down to:

Your developer can code quickly and visually, then push changes to your live store for you to see when it’s ready to be looked at.

This means no messy storefront while we’re working on it. It also means faster development over editing with the BigCommerce backend theme editor which is very slow.

Watch the video above to find out how to generate your API / Stencil CLI key.
